Tony Jones

Note: For his portrayal in the TV series, see Tony Jones (TV Series).

Tony Jones is a typical boy who lives on Earth in a country that resembles the United States at the end of the 20th century. His age is never exactly stated, although he is likely a young teenager based on his speech and physical appearance. Upon moving into a small neighborhood in the fictional city of Tavel Gorge, he attempts to befriend the local children, who decide to test him by asking him to go into a cave and retrieve a crystal. Upon finding the crystal, the cave collapses and Tony finds himself a different world called Magi-Nation.

The Japanese version changes his name to Dan and he instead lives in a Japanese village called Yokohara town, although the rest of the story is for the most part, identical.

Tony is seen by Magi-Nation's inhabitants as the reincarnation of or 'vessel' of the Great Magus Kyros, a prophecied magi who will save the world that will at the same time as his appearance, threaten to collapse. While it is arguable whether or not Tony really is a representation of a Kyros, he is nevertheless asked to take on the responsibility to fight Agram's newly risen army of shadow magi and to save Magi-Nation from destruction at the hands of the Core's inhabitants.

Tony Jones makes a few minor appearances in cards or quotes in Magi-Nation Duel. The Game Boy Color game came with a special limited edition card that featured him as a mid-level character with the ability to use any type of creature.

AppearanceEdit

Battle Portrait

Tony dresses in a red hooded sweatshirt and wears baggy pants with a small ornamental chain and extra pockets along with oversized shoes fitting the stereotypical image of an American 90s teenager. He possesses white skin, blue eyes and blonde hair and is of average height.

In the Japanese version of the game, Tony is changed to look more Japanese. His hair color is rigid and black while his shirt's color is changed to orange and his features becoming more Asian as opposed to Caucasian.

PersonalityEdit

Tony is by nature, somewhat of a pushover compared to other people, as is apparent from the beginning when he is coerced into entering a cave by three other children. In other instances, Valkan similarly coerces him into stealing Ashgar's Key in order to save face, Gogor grabs him and tosses him onto a roof without Tony objecting and he is convinced by Gia to attempt to abandon Magi-Nation after collecting his fourth core stone despite the indications that he might be better off staying behind and helping out for the time being.

On the Travel Screen
VellupAdded by Vellup

When threatened by shadow magi, Tony initially attempts to talk his opponent into avoiding a fight, although as the game progresses, he begins to fight with less hesitation. When talking to most people, Tony is generally very polite and careful in his speech unless provoked by a serious threat on his own or another person's life. Tony seems to be naturally altruistic, automatically being drawn to help when he sees someone in need.

Despite Tony acting benevolently most of the time, it is possible for the player to make him steal items from other peoples' houses, permanently keep Ashgar's Key after he no longer needs it and accept the fourth core stone as a gift in exchange for leaving the shadow magi alone to destroy Magi-Nation without interference.

Oddly, despite his apparent sense of righteousness, Tony never comes across any qualms at the prospect of killing his opponents from the very beginning of his career as a magi. The first person he kills is Togoth, the guardian of the Naroom shadow geyser, whom Tony strikes down without any hesitation or regret afterward. Subsequently, every winning duel he engages in afterward results in the death of the opposing duelist with Salafy being the only exception. Tony never thinks back on the people he has killed, possibly because he doesn't see shadow magi as being fully human and also because all of his opponents have in general, attempted to kill him first.

While unassertive, Tony firmly speaks out whenever someone annoys or violates him, such as struggling when Valkan attempts to drag him away from telling Ashgar of the Cald bridge's failure. He also has a prominent sense of humor, which is a large source of the game's appeal, and when examining random objects, Tony will often make a humorous comment in response.

Plot Overview Edit

The Dare
VellupAdded by Vellup
As the new kid at a small town in Tavel Gorge, Tony is met unenthusiastically by the local children. Before they will accept him as their friend, they require Tony to travel into a cave and retrieve a rare crystal. Upon finding the crystal, a cave-in occurs and Tony falls into a void, waking up in a pool of water, in another world called Magi-Nation (the term 'moonlands' is not used in the Game Boy Color game).

After witnessing a strange creature appear out of his crystal, Tony encounters Eidon, a citizen of the nearby town of Vash Naroom. Eidon takes Tony to his hometown and introduces him to the town elder, thinking him to be the reincarnation of a hero of prophecy, the Great Magus Kyros. However, the elder does not believe in Eidon's opinion and after a sequence of events, Eidon ends up sneaking Tony into Naroom's training grounds in order to teach him how to control dream creatures against Orwin's permission, a skill which Tony easily picks up. As Tony is beginning to get comfortable with the art of the magi, Orwin discovers him outside the town's boundaries just as Naroom experiences an intense earthquake. Orwin heads off to investigate and discovers that the source of the earthquake was a shadow geyser, and is poisoned upon exposing himself to the geyser's protective seal.

Gia's Cabin
VellupAdded by Vellup
With Orwin in critical condition, Tony is prompted to see Gia, a wise old woman who is regarded somewhat as Naroom's matriarchal figure and an ancient source of knowledge and wisdom. Upon seeing Tony, Gia decides that Eidon is right about Tony being the Great Magus Kyros and sends Tony to enter the Naroom shadow geyser in order to destroy it, Tony being the only one who can handle the Core Glyph, and ancient device that allows its owner to bypass a shadow geyser's repulsive energy. Tony suceeds in destroying the shadow geyser by removing a stone from its foundation and as it fades away, he spots a hooded figure who disappears into a cave. Upon following him into the cave, Tony only finds a pair of crystalline blades.

Upon seeing Gia again, Tony shows her the Naroom shadow geyser's core stone. Gia realizes that the stone fits perfectly into the Core Glyph and upon trying to locate similar stones telepathically, decides that the hooded figure was probably carrying three other stones just like it. She prompts Tony to pursue him into the underneath where she suspects the figure has gone.

Wence's Rescue
VellupAdded by Vellup
Tony travels to a town in the Underneath, where upon familiarizing himself with the locals, another earthquake occurs and another shadow geyser appears. Tony offers to close the geyser, and so enters it and takes the second geyser's core stone. However, upon returning to the nearby Town, he finds that it has been ransacked by a group of shadow magi, and spots the hooded figure stationed in the middle of the scene. Tony challenges the figure to a duel, and is easily defeated. Before dying, however, he is saved by a citizen of Naroom who often travels to and from the underneath, Wence. Before leaving, the hooded figure reveals that his name is Morag.

Tony tells Gia of the incident, and resolves that his only option is to find Morag again, as he needs the core stones Morag carries in order to return home. At that moment, Morag appears in Gia's hut and mocking Tony's decision, kidnaps Tony, bringing him to the Cald and allowing him to witness the creation of a third shadow geyser. He is about to kill Tony, but is forced to flee as the citizens of Cald arrive due to the presence of the earthquake caused by the geyser's creation. The townspeople believe Tony to be the geyser's creator, but cannot confront him immediately, because at that moment, a band of shadow magi attack the town. Tony saves the town from the attack, earning their trust, and furthermore offers to close the geyser for the town.

The Shadow Hold
VellupAdded by Vellup
Within the Cald shadow geyser, he encounters a mysterious shadow magi named Warrada, who tests Tony in a mock battle before disappearing. After Tony closes the geyser, the town throws a celebration for him, which is interrupted by Morag, who captures Tony a second time, throwing him in the Shadow Hold. Tony escapes from his cell with the aid of an unknown hooded figure and finds his way out of the prison, ending up in the undersea region of Orothe, breathing with the help of a tool called the Orothean Belt. Discovering that another geyser has appeared in Orothe, Tony enters this fourth geyser, and meets Warrada once more as the geyser's guardian, who offers Tony the choice of accepting the core stone without a fight on the condition that he promises not to close any more geysers in the future or interfere with the plans of the shadow magi in general.
Confronting Agram
VellupAdded by Vellup
Regardless of his choice, Tony travels to the Core entrance, where he discovers that the Core Glyph apparently is not ready to open the Core gate. He then encounters a winged creature that claims to be the same figure who rescued him from the Shadow Hold, claiming to be a member of the winged Arderial race. The Arderial magi are battling shadow magi in their cloud city, whereupon Tony is taken the entrance of their palace to meet their queen. Tony then, for the first time, encounters Agram, the overall leader of the shadow magi. Agram tells Tony that he will wait in the Core, ready to battle him, and that in order for the Core Glyph to work, it needs five stones instead of four to be inserted in its slots.

After obtaining the fifth core stone, Tony meets Agram within the Core and is prevented with a choice--to go home without a fight or duel Agram in an attempt to save the fate of the people of Magi-Nation, whom Agram intends to exterminate. If Tony chooses to take up Agram's offer, he is returned home, but the other children still reject him, and Magi-Nation is presumably doomed. If he defeats Agram, the world of Magi-Nation is saved, and Tony returns home earning the respect of the other children who recognize his bravery in surviving the cave in that occurred when he found Furok's crystal.

Creatures and AbilitiesEdit

While Tony's signature creature is usually assumed to be his Furok whose crystal he found in the Tavel Gorge cave, the player is allowed to use any creature he wishes during the game instead of Furok and can even have a ringsmith destroy Furok's ring as soon as he forges another to replace it. Tony possesses a seemingly unique affinity for commanding any type of creature from any region, even from the Core. The connection between him and his creatures is apparently so strong that he is capable of summoning a creature from raw animite before it is forged into a ring, although it is possible that this phenomenon is unique to his Furok.

Tony easily grasps the basics of dueling after his first ever battle, and can learn how to cast any spell after looking at its spellbook once. He can quickly grow in power throughout the game, increasing both his energy level and the strength of his creatures at a rate that is only matched by his rival in Naroom's training grounds, Salafy.

The Famous Quote
VellupAdded by Vellup
Being from a completely different world than Magi-Nation, Tony is unable to speak the native language of the magi, and must rely on a magical translation bracelet given to him by Eidon in order to understand and talk in their speech. If he does not wear the bracelet, then inhabitants of Magi-Nation instead speak a nonsensical string of bizarre words. He is curiously able to understand the words of an Ancient without the use of his bracelet as he discovers while talking to Agram in the throne room of the Arderial palace. He is also immune to the harmful effects that a normal magi would usually experience from exposure to the energy present in a shadow geyser's protective seal and the efforts of any shadow magi who attacks him using this same type of energy. While normal magi would experience petrification, poisoning, being turned to mush or immediate death, Tony simply feels a stinging sensation that leaves his body otherwise unharmed. In a similar vein, he is also able to touch the Core Glyph, whereas any other magi would feel extreme pain upon engaging in direct contact with it.

Tony's unusual powers seem to stem from his being a native of Earth, and him being to 'vessel' of the legendary Great Magus Kyros, growing so strong in such a short period of time because he channels Kyros's immense strength inside him, and maintaining his immunity to influences such as the seal on a shadow geyser or the Core Glpyh because the energy they emit is meant to repel those native to Magi-Nation while his own species, being native to Earth remains unaffected.

Without the aid of the Orothean belt, Tony is notably unable to swim, although he seems to be rather athletic, as the player can hold down the 'run' button and have Tony sprint from place to place without him ever becoming tired, talking to be people without any indication that he is out of breath.

Tony's Sprite hidden in the GBA game's coding
VellupAdded by Vellup
Dan
Tony Jones appears in a puzzle game developed by Interactive Imagination called Keeper's Quest. His character also appears in the Japanese version of the game, although his name is changed to "Dan" and his appearance differs, the most notable difference being the switching of his hair color to black. Dan's personality and speech patterns are also much different from Tony's; being much more outgoing and excitable then Tony, he acts very similar to many of the main characters of various Shonen Anime, such as Naruto.

Despite Dan's appearance, Tony's dialogue sprite is actually coded into the GBA game, although it doesn't appear possible to play as his character.

TriviaEdit

Tony in the game's starting screen
Lhikan634Added by Lhikan634
  1. Tony wears the same set of clothes for his entire journey. Many characters make remarks at his unfamiliar garb, which implies that there is nowhere in Magi-Nation where he could have possibly obtained a replacement for them. Taking into account that saving the player's progress in a town is akin to a day passing (since it is always implied that Tony stays at an inn overnight) and considering that he is occasionally exposed to direct attacks from opposing dream creatures as well as constantly running around environments filled with leaves, dirt, ash, salt water, necrotic matter and general wear and tear, it is almost a miracle that he is able to wear this same set of clothes upon his return to Tavel Gorge without them showing any signs of abuse.
